Highlights of recent sales in the Western art market.

Western Art Collector magazine has changed the way artists, galleries and collectors connect, and it has closed the gap that previously existed in the Western art market. Our SOLD! section is where we highlight these connections, as well as other sales occuring within the market. Within this monthly section you can read just some of the feedback pouring into our office from coast to coast about art sales, including some made directly from the pages of the magazine. You never know—your next art purchase could be in this issue.

Western-themed Disneyland poster sells at Heritage Auctions

During Heritage Auctions’ November 20 Movie Posters Signature Auction, a rare 1956 Disneyland poster for the Frontierland attraction was offered to bidders. The hand-pulled, silk-screened poster, with artwork by Bjorn Aronson, showed a playful rendering of a stagecoach, a train going through a mine and horses with riders. The poster sold for $28,800, becoming one of the top lots of the sale, which often has a number of noteworthy Western works in it.

New collectors are discovering the work of Kenneth Ferguson

Painter Kenneth Ferguson has seen continued success from his involvement with Western Art Collector, most recently from his Artist Focus article in the November 2021 issue. “Western Art Collector has provided another avid buyer, who prefers to work directly with the artist, the opportunity to become aware of my work and purchase directly from me,” Ferguson says. “As of today, she has purchased two paintings and has another in the pipeline, contingent on whether it fits the space. Online exposure is always appreciated, but for those collectors who prefer to ‘discover’ their latest art obsession by perusing periodicals, Western Art Collector seems to always be on their list. As an aside, when my wife Diana spoke with this collector, asking where she had seen the painting she wished to acquire, she emphatically stated, ‘In the magazine! In the magazine!’”

Thomas Hart Benton work brings in huge results at Christie’s American art sale

At Christie’s American art sale on November 18, 2021, a magnificent painting by Thomas Hart Benton astounded bidders when it sold for $4.8 million, well over its $3 million high estimate. The work, Keith Farm, Chilmark, was one of the top lots of the $28 million sale. “Benton’s romantic views of rural America,” the catalog notes about the piece, “increasingly relegated human subjects to distant forms, seeking in his landscapes a timeless, nostalgic representation of an American way of life under threat.”

Classic Couse scene sells at Coeur d’Alene’s November online sale

On November 13, the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction offered a collection of work in an online sale. The works ranged from more affordable pieces for beginning collectors to major works by Western masters. One of the top pieces was Eanger Irving Couse’s Repose, a lovely image of a Native American figure lying next to a stream. The work fell within estimates when it sold for $60,500. —
