Artist Focus

Mark Bowles

A focus on the artwork of Mark Bowles

A contemporary Western landscape painter, Mark Bowles explores the viewer’s relationship to landscape within the context of time. Layers of color patterns weave into each other, creating a feeling of transition as his skies reach toward the heavens and down to the apex of emotion, where the land meets the sky. A modernist by nature, his paintings downplay the specificity of a place and rather focus on how a person feels gazing at them, creating an emotional connection of wonderment.

“Whether I am working with a still life, the human figure or landscape, I am always fascinated by texture, form and color which I use in expressing how I feel about what I am seeing,” Bowles writes. “I do not limit myself in what I paint or how I might interpret what I see. This freedom allows my work to move from representational to minimalist to abstraction. My work is ever changing, ever challenging and always a passionate delight. It is always my intention to address the canvas directly, honestly and boldly. My heart is always pushing my work to find new language in expressing what I see and how I feel about it. The result therefore is not just an intellectual exercise for me, it is being involved in the ‘now’…always open for change and challenge…always evolving.”

Together with beaded skull artist Ali Rouse Launer, Bowles will present a new collection of work on August 26, 2022. The show will be called Formation / Transformation, as both artists explore time and nature’s relationship within the context of the contemporary Western art aesthetic. The event will run through September 4 at Canyon Road Contemporary in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
