Keepers of the West

A new exhibition at the Griffin Museum of Photography highlights the work of Landry Major.

Opening January 6 at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, Massachusetts, is Keepers of the West, a new solo exhibition featuring the Western photography of Landry Major, a California-based artist who is heavily inspired by horses of the American West.

“Visions of the American West have long been a part of our culture, but the way of life of the cowboy and the family-run ranch is fast disappearing,” Major writes. “In this project I hope to capture the essence of this way of life before it is gone. I strive to create images that will remind us of a simpler life that has been a deep part of our history, one where hard work and stoicism are part of the daily experience, while at the same time, sharing rich moments of grace and beauty in a life lived under the wide-open Western skies.”

Major’s black-and-white works, often moody and full of intense shadows, show humans and horses seemingly at peace within an untamed nature. Works include Racing the Storm, which shows a single horse and rider silhouetted against a ridgeline as storm clouds brew in the distant background.

Keepers of the West is part of a suite of seven solo exhibitions themed around horses. The overall exhibition name is E. caballus, the Latin name of the horse. The exhibitions continue through February 27.
