Sculptor Susan Kliewer says, “My work aims to show the common thread that underlies all human experience, and which I hope brings us to a greater understanding between all peoples.” Her bronze sculpture Love Song depicts a Navajo man playing his flute for his enraptured partner. Kliewer has lived in Arizona for 37 years, five of them working at the remote Marble Canyon Trading Post where she became friends with many Navajo people, some of whom are models for her sensitive sculptures of their everyday life.
Susan Kliewer, Love Song, bronze, 20 x 15 x 10"
Love Song is in the exhibition Impressions of Arizona at Mountain Trails Gallery in Sedona, Arizona, January 7 through 31, featuring nearly two dozen works of art. Gallery director Julie R. Williams notes, “We are so fortunate to live in this fascinating state which has been a remarkable resource for artistic talent for decades.”
Linda Glover Gooch, Canyon Motif, oil, 24 x 20"
Linda Glover Gooch paints Arizona’s Grand Canyon in her softly lit Canyon Motif, an example of her wish “to bring a quiet peace to people. I hope viewers will receive something more than the visual.” She says, “I paint best when I know a place well.” Her familiarity with the Canyon allows her to paint it in a moment of quiet, unembellished by dramatic light effects or stormy weather.
Richard Boyer, Sedona Rain, oil, 30 x 30"
Richard Boyer paints a mundane moment in a dramatic setting in his painting Sedona Rain. He says, “I realize there is so much more to painting than merely applying the pigment to the surface according to a preconceived formula. There is a learning process I am experiencing from one painting to the next, a quest for knowledge to know the subject on which I am working.”
Deborah Copenhaver Fellows, She’s a Little Wet Behind the Ears, bronze, 22 x 20 x 10"
Deborah Copenhaver Fellows grew up on a cattle and quarter horse ranch in Idaho and now lives in Southern Arizona. Brought up around horses, and a competitive rodeo rider, Fellows knows them intimately and can depict them and their riders in their many moods. She’s a Little Wet Behind the Ears is a simple moment in the life of a colt.
