Artist Focus: Raymond Wattenhofer

With a contemplative perspective and eye for authenticity, artist Raymond Wattenhofer creates art that reflects the lives of contemporary cowboys, cowgirls and ranch families of the vast American West.

Born in Minnesota, Wattenhofer grew up on a cattle operation with saddle horses and early on developed a fascination in art—first in drawings, and later in paintings and sculpture. After a stint in the U.S. Coast Guard, he headed to Wyoming to learn saddle making and later studied fine art at Art Instructions Schools, Minneapolis. A Race With Time, oil on linen, 20 x 30”

Gatekeepers, oil on aluminum, 18¾ x 12”Today, Wattenhofer works primarily in oil, egg tempera and watercolor mediums. He has also been successful with bronze sculptures of various sizes and has had several commissions, including lifesize commissions.

“My art is thoughtfully shaped by the spirit and fortitude of the folks who live and thrive on the ranches of the expansive Great Plains,” he says. “The alluring beauty of the open ranch country, along with the excellent cow horses they ride, is what makes my drawings and paintings come alive to inspire the imagination of the viewer.”—
