Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Kenneth Ferguson

Kenneth Ferguson is a painter who has his heart in his work. Early on, he veered away from commercial illustration and instead has made his living as a fine artist, choosing to express his long-standing interest in history and nature through his paintings. The lifeways of the Native American people who traditionally made their home on the Great Plains, as well as the animals that surrounded them, are an area of particular interest for Ferguson. He says, “With my paintings, I shake the dust off the past and present traditional subjects in a more vivid, contemporary way. While my subject matter reflects the 19th century, I paint it as a 21st-century artist.” Veteran of Many Battles, watercolor and gouache, 24 x 24”

Ferguson stands out for his commitment to working solely in transparent and opaque watercolor. He enjoys pushing the medium beyond its usual boundaries. “People have an impression of watercolor, and are often surprised at the rich colors and clean, well-defined edges that can be achieved,” he notes. In the Land of the Crow, watercolor and gouache, 14 x 14”

Land of Enchantment, watercolor and gouache, 14 x 14”

He will be showing his work at select juried fine art shows in Arizona this fall and winter. For more details and show dates and locations, visitwww.kennethfergusonfineart.com.—
