Barbara Meikle’s iconic gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a celebration of color, texture and form—a perfect way to refresh and recharge in the City Different. Meikle has owned the gallery for 15 years, creating a broad array of landscapes, horses, burros and other animals, all in oil on canvas or in bronze, to captivate the viewer and collector. The gallery is a must-see art destination in a town known for close to 200 galleries and art spaces.
Meeting at the River, oil on canvas, 40 x 60"
One of Meikle’s passions is raising money for horse and donkey rescues around the country, and the local wildlife center, which re-homes in the wild 70 percent of the animals they save. These creatures are a constant inspiration, as are the wild horses in New Mexico and Arizona. Meikle paints images of these symbols of the Wild West in hopes to inspire people to donate to rescues, or rescue a donkey or horse themselves.
Riverflow to Sunset, oil on canvas, 48 x 36”
Cactus Garden Hummer, oil on canvas, 40 x 30”
A native New Mexican, Meikle is continuously fascinated by the high desert of Santa Fe. She paints in the open air, alongside the Chama River or at Ghost Ranch, as well as in her studio. The bronze sculpture is an extension of her paintings, with hot color patinas applied by the artist; each piece is unique with the brilliant hues painted, thrown or airbrushed on the bronze. Meikle paints and sculpts in her gallery almost every weekend, so come visit Santa Fe, meet the artist and enjoy what inspires her in the Southwest. —
