Power of Three

The third Art of the American West Sale of the year at John Moran’s brings fresh-to-market Western art and sculpture.

While John Moran Auctioneers typically holds its Art of the American West sale just twice annually, this year they’re adding a third. Taking place November 30, the upcoming sale will include offerings from esteemed Western artists as well as American Indian jewelry, textiles, baskets and pottery. Among some of the major historic lots in the sale are works by Olaf C. Seltzer and Eanger Irving Couse, while contemporary talents like George Carlson and Navajo artist Anthony Chee Emerson round out the modern works.Eanger Irving Couse (1866-1936), The Turkey Hunter, oil on canvas, 24 x 30”  Estimate: $60/80,000

“[Due to] increased demand, a third sale is being added to the 2021 lineup in this category,” says Morgana Blackwelder, director of fine art at John Moran’s. “The auction is a nice blend of historical art from some of the finest Southwest painters of the early-20th century as well as more contemporary works.”Ray Swanson (1937-2004), Going Visitin’, 1977, oil on canvas board, 30 x 36” Estimate: $10/15,000

Among these are Ray Swanson’s 1977 oil Going Visitin’ (est. $10/15,000), as well as Seltzer’s Grizzly Tracks, a watercolor, gouache and pencil on paperboard estimated to bring in between $3,000 and $5,000. And undeniably one of the top lots in the sale is The Turkey Hunter, by Couse, which has a presale estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.Olaf C. Seltzer (1877-1957), Grizzly Tracks, watercolor, gouache and pencil on paperboard, 7 x 9½”  Estimate: $3/5,000

George Carlson, Mysteries of Migration, patinated bronze on wood base, 16 x 11 x 9”  Estimate: $3/5,000

“More and more new buyers are entering the market and honoring the artist’s skill whether the medium be oil on canvas, turquoise in silver or twilled wool from a loom. Each object represents hundreds of hours of labored love and thousands of hours of mastery by the artist,” Blackwelder says. “From George Carlson to Eanger Irving Couse, the curated selections reflect the hand of the artist and come November will find new homes…We sell a broad range [of] categories that represent a wide range of time periods, never more clearly represented than in our Art of the American West auctions. Here, history meets present day.” She adds that a combination of online bidding and intimate in-person previews “seem to be a recipe for success with our last sale achieving a 98 percent sell-through.”

The Art of the American West sale takes place November 30 at noon Pacific Time. —
