The sale will include around 300 lots and also allows collectors to find work from all areas of the market—traditional cowboy, wildlife, sporting and contemporary, to name a few.

Highlighting the November 4 sale will be property from Palm Springs Art Museum, which is being sold to support the care of collections and the George Montgomery fund for acquisitions. Works that were originally from the collection of Montgomery, who was a Hollywood film actor, producer and director and also a bronze artist, include Sydney Laurence’s Mount McKinley from the South Side (est. $15/25,000) and Alfred von Wierusz Kowalski’s Return from the Hunt (est. $20/30,000). Property from the Homer E. Noble Collection, of Denver, includes several leading artists. Noble was an investor in land and natural resources, an advocate for the environment and assembled a fine art collection that included horses as a primary inspiration. The top lot from the grouping is a landscape, Thomas Moran’s View of Zion, which has an estimate of $100,000 to $200,000. An illustrated letter addressed to Harry P. Stanford by Charles M. Russell is also noteworthy and is expected to sell between $50,00 and $70,000. There will be several pieces by Randall Davey hitting the market from the collector including Rearing Horse, Cheltenham, England (est. $3/5,000) and Jocky’s Girl (est. $1,5/2,500).Allan Houser (1914-1994), Looking On, 1992, bronze, ed. 10 of 12, 32¼ x 14½ x 9”. Contemporary artists are also represented well in the auction including Howard Post’s Homestead (est. $10/15,000) and the 1986 painting The Big Wait, by Billy Schenck, that is set at $18,000 to $24,000.

“We have a beautiful example by Kim Wiggins titled Wild Horses in High Country,” says Alexandria Dreas, Hindman’s cataloguer of Western art. “It’s almost a rainbow scene, and it’s a truly spectacular work. He’s been getting so much attention [and had] a number of gallery shows over the summer. It’s a wonderful example of his work and the colors are brilliant.” The painting, measuring a commanding 72 inches on its longest side, is estimated at $10,000 to $15,000. Dreas adds, “It’s great to see how contemporary artists are doing on the secondary market.”Earl Biss (1947-1998), Warrior with Rifle, 1987, oil on canvas, 14 x 18”.
