The fall lineup for John Moran Auctioneers’ California & American Fine Art Sale features artwork by some of the top historic California artists, including Granville Redmond, Edgar Payne, Percy Gray, Jules Tavernier, Thomas Hill and Jack Wilkinson Smith. One of the auction house’s longest standing sales, this autumn rendition of the California & American Fine Art Sale will have around 120 lots of carefully curated works from private collections across the country. Another noteworthy group in the sale includes several turn-of-the-century women artists who were trailblazers of their time: Marion Kavanagh Wachtel, Lillie May Nicholson, Elizabeth Pond, Mabel Alvarez and many others.
Edgar Payne (1883-1947), Swiss village with mountains, oil on canvas laid to canvas, 20¼ x 24” Estimate: $20/30,000
Granville Redmond (1871-1935), October, (Study), oil on canvas, 10¼ x 12” Estimate: $10/15,000
“Moran’s received a large collection of works from an important Southern California collector,” says Morgana Blackwelder, John Moran fine art director. “Their passion was collecting works they loved and that represented the areas they had lived along the coast. Three of the works featured [in the upcoming auction]…are from their collection. The Percy Gray, Granville Redmond, and then Lillie May Nicholson are all from the same consignor,” she says.
Redmond’s October, (Study) is a stunning oil of an autumn scene that is expected to fetch between $10,000 and $15,000, while Gray’s vertical watercolor A Lane of Eucalyptus Trees, painted in 1924, has a presale estimate of $8,000 to $12,000. Other noteworthy works include Payne’s Swiss village with mountains, estimated at $20,000 to $30,000.
Percy Gray (1869-1952), A Lane of Eucalyptus Trees, 1924, watercolor on paper, 20 x 14” Estimate: $8/12,000
Lillie May Nicholson (1884-1964), Fishing Boats and Cable with Catch, Monterey Bay, oil on double-sided board, 10¼ x 13½” Estimate: $4/6,000
“Moran’s is honored to continue to sell artistic representations of our historic state’s vast and impressive landscape,” says Blackwelder. “Preserving time in art is a true gift and these artists have mastered it beautifully.”
