Artist Focus: Lew Brennan

Australia-based realist painter Lew Brennan hopes that each painting he completes touches the viewer in a special way. “My ultimate goal with each creation is to capture and transfer emotion,” he says. “My subjects vary but rarely stray too far from respecting small-town country values, remote spaces and the living things within them that I love.”Sutter, oil on canvas, 36 x 36”. Available through T.H. Brennen Fine Art.

Two Grey Friends, oil on canvas 36 x 48”. Available through Avra Art Gallery.

The painter specializes mainly in rural themes using charcoal and oils, and he regularly exhibits his work around the globe, as well as in significant private collections.

Born with a pencil in his hand, Brennan’s technical and detailed work belies his lack of formal training. His personal connection to his subject is evident in the care taken in each aspect of his work, whether in charcoal or oil paint. She Stole Erwins Jacket, Borrowed Leeroy’s Truck and Headed East, charcoal on Fabriano paper, 36 x 36”. Available through the artist.

“We have lived this country life since we were teens, raising a family, cattle and quarter horses in this little valley, and I still see new subjects around me every day,” he says. “To me, the art of capturing these images with a burned stick of wood on paper is primal in its application and spiritual in its essence. I feel blessed to be able to live this way.” —
