Hunters & Explorers

A new book by John Seerey-Lester is a tribute to his adventurous spirit as an artist and author.

The thrilling, spontaneous and dangerous aspects of the wilderness are explored at great length in a new book on the art of John Seerey-Lester, the beloved wildlife painter who died in 2020. The book, Legendary Hunters and Explorers, is tribute to the artist, but it is also his last words to his many fans and collectors—he died during the final writing of the book. Legendary Hunters and Explorers by John Seerey-Lester. Published by Sporting Classics.

In addition to hundreds of works of art by the gifted artist, Legendary Hunters and Explorers also offers a picture into the life and career of Seerey-Lester, who had a sense of humor about the predicaments he found himself in. He tells a story about camping with his father and growing bored with cans of stew the two of them had packed. At one point they shot four squirrels to add to their meals. “The next day, two things were obvious: It takes more than four squirrels to feed a man, regardless of the stew, and we will not be shooting any more squirrels on that trip,” he wrote. Thunder Valley, oil on linen, 36 x 60”

While there are some great wilderness tales, the book excels at revealing the stories behind subjects who inspired Seerey-Lester at his easel. From historical figures such a Theodore Roosevelt and Winston Churchill to Hugh Glass, who survived a horrific bear attack, and lesser-known people like Walter Dalrymple Maitland Bell, a famous big-game hunter from the early 20th century. Seerey-Lester spent more than three years researching and writing the stories that form the backbone of the publication. The book features compelling stories from 25 people, all of them hunters and explorers.Road Block, oil on linen, 40 x 36"

His wife, Suzie Seerey-Lester, pens a chapter of the book and speaks to John’s dedication as an artist. “John’s love of painting and his ability to touch people will always be remembered. He was a king among wildlife artists, but humble and down to earth,” she writes. “The art world has lost an incredible man. I have lost my hero.”
