In searching for new inspiration, Derek Penix packed up his family and embarked on a major road excursion in pursuit of a new place to settle. After venturing along the East Coast, he felt California beckoning him with its abundance of diverse agriculture and visual stimulation.

He has found his opus in California. Penix’s passion for this new environment is revealed in his vignettes of vined peaches that are as sensual and tasty as the fruit itself. The artist enjoys the process of discovery in his subjects and the scientific approach to painting.

“The analytical side of painting is invigorating to me,” says Penix. Nothing is cut-and-dried in the infinite approaches one can have when attempting to capture a moment in time on canvas. He not only enjoys working out these techniques in his own studio but enjoys sharing these methods through teaching workshops. He explains, “Teaching gives me energy. It invigorates me to share why things work in a certain manner, be it color application or technique.”

Penix enjoys painting everything from a cityscape to the intricate presence in a stanchion of trees. His work is close-up and personal, and you can find his latest creations at Claggett/Rey Gallery in Edwards, Colorado.—
