Visions of the West

The Plainsmen Gallery in Dunedin, Florida, is looking forward to hosting its annual Wildlife & Western Visions

The Plainsmen Gallery in Dunedin, Florida, is looking forward to hosting its annual Wildlife & Western Visions from April 24 to May 24. The show will be an in-person event, allowing collectors the chance to view approximately 75 works of art by 21 esteemed artists. The pieces will range from sculpture to paintings in traditional and contemporary styles, with artwork from Guy Combes, Jim Eppler, Randy Galloway, Peter Gerbert, Grant Hacking, Deborah LaFogg, Chris Navarro, Grant Redden and Suzie Seerey-Lester, being among the highlights.Steven Lang, War Medicine, oil, 20 x 32”

John Coleman’s sculpture Maiden from Second Mesa “represents an unmarried girl with a traditional squash blossom whorl hairdo of the Hopi tribe,” says Coleman. “Squash blossoms are considered a fertility symbol in Hopi culture.”John Coleman, Maiden from Second Mesa, bronze, ed. of 35, 10½ x 6½ x 4½”

Apache Defiance, by David Yorke, depicts a Chiriachua Apache protecting his people. It also highlights an atmospheric effect that is frequent in Yorke’s artwork. “I enjoy painting with sunset lighting whenever possible,” he explains. “Matching that color sense of drama and luminosity with pigment can be challenging enough. But regarding the photo reference, it’s also often a mad rush to capture the right pose or action before that magic moment of light disappears into dusk.”David Yorke, Apache Defiance, oil, 36 x 20”

Another work depicting Native Americans is War Medicine by Steven Lang. The artist says, “I’ve always been fascinated by the Native American symbolism of horse painting and the paraphernalia with which they adorned their horses for war. When the time came, they would decorate their horses in the most visually effective way to ‘advertise’ their horse’s accomplishments and their own. The spectacle of a decked out warrior astride his equally flamboyant horse is one few forget.”Clark Kelley Price, A Drink Well Earned, oil, 20 x 30”

Nicholas Coleman, Warm Fire, oil, 10 x 8”

Wildlife & Western Visions kicks off with a reception on opening day from 1 to 4 p.m. “We’re thrilled that since many of our clients have had the Covid vaccine now, they will feel more comfortable attending this annual show in person,” say gallery co-owners Jill Berry and Betty Brown. “We will still require masks and social distancing, for the safety of all attendees.” —
