Gordon Snidow

A focus on the artwork of Gordon Snidow

There are a few ranches where preservation of our heritage is important. Where they still take the wagon out. Where cowboying is still done the traditional way, by “dragging calves to the fire.” Where an effort is made to keep the Star Mill working, not because it is the best or the easiest way to draw water but because it is part of history. Too soon, the sun will set on “the last Star Mill,” and not long after that, the last cowboy. A way of life will end. Those words were written almost 20 years ago by Gordon Snidow and published in his 2002 book Gordon Snidow, My Story, which documented his exhibitions at the Hubbard Museum and the Smithsonian. Sheltered, gouache, 23 x 14”

Hurry up and Wait, gouache, 14 x 17”

Sage Advice, gouache, 24 x 15"

Today, Snidow, at 85 times around the sun, still goes to his easel every day to create amazing paintings of the people, animals and culture of the West. His chosen medium is gouache. Snidow is a master of this tricky medium of opaque watercolor, which he presents like an oil painting without glass on board using a proprietary museum varnish. Each luminous painting has the depth and layers of this master’s hand. At first glance they seem to be traditional depictions, but when you take the time to look deeper they are a mixture of soft and hard edges mixed with abstract contemporary splatterings and color to achieve the idea he set out to honor.—
