Painter Barbara Meikle has her mind on Arizona, which has inspired much of her newest work, including pieces featuring wild horses.

“Last January I photographed the Salt River horses, wild horses that roam the river south of Phoenix, Arizona,” Meikle says. “I’ve been captivated by the horses, the family groups that care for each other, the reflection and action in the water by these beautiful animals…the well has not run dry yet on these inspiring creatures, so lots more paintings are in the works!”
She also has new shows set for Arizona, including new works available in Desert Caballeros Western Art Museum’s Cowgirl Up! Art From the Other Half of the West in Wickenburg. The show, which opens March 27 and runs through July 27, features many of the top women artists working today. It’s Meikle’s ninth year at the annual show.

Then, in Southern Arizona, the artist will have new work available at Cobalt fine Art Gallery in Tubac. “It’s a wonderful gallery, now with two locations, in a charming little town that was once an artist’s colony—not unlike Santa Fe, where I have my own gallery. Needless to say, the draw of the desert has its hold on me!”
And, of course, Meikle has work available at her gallery, Barbara Meikle Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The painter also has new bronze works available, including a longhorn piece titled Eye of the Storm that will be available at Cowgirl Up! and Cobalt. “It’s a bit about surviving as an artist and gallery owner in 2020, with determination to see this all through, come hell or high water…I’m glad to say we are looking forward to a busy summer and counting our blessings as we go.” —
