While many of us are looking to this new year with hopeful hearts and a fresh start, there still remains a lot of uncertainty. Art events, such as with the Booth Western Art Museum, are still responding with safer, virtual viewing options. The Booth canceled their annual Gala extravaganza, and instead are offering the virtual event For the Love of Art 2021, described as “an art auction wrapped in a variety show.”
Mikel Donahue, Plains Ponies, acrylic, 18 x 24”
The museum has partnered with Hindman Auctions to bring 80 lots of paintings, sculpture and collectibles, such as jewelry and books, to the safety of everyone’s home. There will be a silent auction and live auction, all readily available through Zoom. Top artists in the West such as Tom Dorr, Z.S. Liang, Kim Wiggins and Gary Niblett have contributed pieces for the sale to be held on February 20 at 7:00 p.m.
There’s excitement surrounding work such as Mikel Donahue’s piece Plains Ponies, depicting a stunning cloudy sky with a tree haloed in golden leaves, and a Native American man riding through a herd of horses. Such scenes call out to the beauty of the West and its cultural history.
Z.S. Liang, Lakota Elder, oil, 12 x 16”
Z.S. Liang has submitted his piece Lakota Elder, of an older Lakota man in a headdress. Portions of the painting have been unfinished or rather, portions of canvas let exposed, while the rest of the background is abstracted brushwork.
“We’re trying to grow the Western art market in our part of the country,” says Booth executive director Seth Hopkins. “We’re making this as fun as an event as we can and we also promise no boring speeches!” In addition to the auction, entertainment will be provided by way of Western musicians, artist shout-outs, comedy skits and even a celebrity roast.
Tom Dorr, Bringing in Backup, oil, 24 x 36”
There will also be a Booth Virtual Field Trip fund to help schools attain more access to the Booth through distance learning or even in-person trips when conditions improve. Other benefits include Point Rider sponsorships for $1,000, that includes personal tours of auction items, entry into a drawing for a framed, original painting by top Western artist Michael Desatnick and a private Happy Hour Zoom tour of the art auction.
To cultivate more excitement for the event, entry tickets will come in a special party box, delivered to your home, and includes a bingo card to win a giclee of Martin Grelle’s piece The Newlyweds.
Kim Wiggins, The Road to Taos, oil, 8 x 10”
Tickets are available for purchase through February 5, with details about the event available through the Booth Facebook page, and the Booth website. Hopkins adds, “We invite our friends and family from all over the country, and new friends that don’t know us that well, to jump online and get ready for some fun!” —
