Mountain Trails Gallery in Park City, Utah, hosts an upcoming group show featuring works by Mark Gibson, Amy Lay, Tal Walton and Simon Winegar. Bearing the title The Iconic West, the exhibition takes viewers through various imagery reminiscent of the West—a modest forest of aspens, a bright red barn, mustangs against mountainous backdrops and prairies of gold. From Gibson’s signature portraits of teepees illuminated from within, to the flowing brushstrokes of Lay’s wildlife scenes, The Iconic West enchants us.

“My pieces in this show are geared toward seasons in the West,” says Winegar. “Many of them are farms and natural landscapes that feature a specific time of year: pumpkins in an autumn setting, frost that clings to the trees in the wintertime, the verdant greens of fragrant alfalfa fields. Things that evoke memories and goodness in the open spaces and natural places I hold so dear.”

Amy Lay, Mustangs And Mountains, oil, 40 x 72”
Walton will be showing works completed over the past year. “The imagery is reminiscent of traditional Americana rural landscapes, whether it be a composition of an aspen grove or a mountain barn, my intention is to evoke contemplation about times past and potential simpler times in the present,” he says. The oil painter’s works are stunning in their eeriness; in Aspens in White and Night Aspens, rows of the slender trees have shed their leaves for winter, looking bleak yet beautiful, knowing they’ll sprout new foliage come spring. Red Barn is a piece distilled to its simplest form, a striking red barn against a white sky. “My technique is a fusion between Old World renaissance using marble grounds, Italian clay and gold leaf, combining a style similar to early century tonalism. I’m looking forward to the show, I’m always excited to see the different reactions the work elicits.”

The Iconic West: Featuring work by Mark Gibson, Amy Lay, Tal Walton and Simon Winegar will run from February 11 to 17 with an artist reception on Saturday, February 13 from 3 to 6 in the evening.
“Some of my favorite shows are those that bring artists whose work is different from my own, but not so different that I can’t relate to it,” Winegar adds. “I feel like this show is like that. Giving enough similarity that it makes sense, but also distinct differences so that viewing the overall show is at once intriguing and satisfying.” —
