John Coleman, 1876, Gall - Sitting Bull - Crazy Horse, oil, 44 x 65½”
John Coleman’s November 2016 solo show at the Legacy Gallery is the stuff of legend. The painter and sculptor had set aside a whole year prior to the show, even canceling appearances at major exhibitions and sales around the country, to prepare for the show in Scottsdale, Arizona. He produced five drawings, 10 oil paintings and five bronzes, and by the end of the night everything was sold, all to the tune of more than $1.4 million. For Coleman, the success of the show was personal vindication that he could be both a sculptor and a painter. For everyone else, they got to witness history in the making. Now, four years later, Coleman is once again holding a major solo show at Legacy—it is slated for October 2020. One of the earliest works to come out of the studio is this piece, 1876, Gall - Sitting Bull - Crazy Horse, which is based one of the artist’s most famous bronze works. —
