Hindman’s Arts of the American West sale features a selection of traditional and contemporary Western paintings and sculpture.

On June 4, Hindman will hold the first Arts of the American West auction in its new 7,000-square-foot saleroom located in the River North Art District of Denver. The sale, which will have more than 350 lots, will include a selection of 19th- and 20th-century Western and wildlife paintings and sculpture along with a group of Thomas Molesworth furniture. There will also be a session of approximately 50 works by Colorado/Western regionalist artists.Ed Mell, Evening Cast/Monument Valley, 2007, oil on canvas, 16 x 20” Estimate:  $5/7,000

“The June 4 auction includes great examples of 19th- and 20th-century traditional and modernist Western wildlife and regionalist paintings and sculpture,” says Katherine Hlavin, director, specialist of Western art at Hindman. Martin Grelle, A Warrior’s Pride, 2001, oil on canvas, 30 x 24”. Highlights include A Warrior’s Pride by Martin Grelle, depicting a Native American warrior on horseback, his horse and another equine companion clad in war paint. The oil has an estimate of $20,000 to $40,000. Ed Mell’s oil Canyon Cottonwoods is projected to sell between $15,000 to $25,000, while his Evening Cast/Monument Valley is estimated to hammer at $5,000 to $7,000. Collectors can also find in the May 8 sale works by G. Harvey, Brett James Smith, Bill Anton, Kyle Sims, Carrie Fell, Theodore Waddell, Walt Gonske, Robert Daughters, John Moyers, Howard Post, Charlie Fritz, Thom Ross, Buck McCain, Joe Beeler, Bill Owen, Gene Kloss, Louisa McElwain and Michael Coleman. There is an extensive selection of contemporary Western bronzes by artists such as Vic Payne, Dave McGary, John Coleman and others. Payne’s bronze Restless in Santa Fe has a presale estimate of $8,000 to $12,000, Brett James Smith’s oil Camp Fisherman is expected to fetch up to $12,000, and an untitled painting by Post has an estimate of $6,000 to $8,000. The sale is also set to feature approximately 12 pieces of Molesworth decorative objects from a historic Wyoming Ranch along with a group of property being sold to benefit the acquisitions fund of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming.Louisa McElwain (1936-2013), Dancing Ground, oil on canvas,12 x 36” Estimate: $5/7,000
