As one of the earliest Western painters, George Catlin has a unique perspective on the Western frontier, Native American people and the dramatic changes that occurred to both in the 19th century. His work is featured in a new show, Picturing the American Buffalo: George Catlin and Modern Native American Artists, now up at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Spun off a similar show that took place at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in 2013, this version of the exhibition features a larger presence by Native American artists who are represented in the Smithsonian collection. The exhibition continues through April 12.
