David Kiehm takes inspiration for his artwork from the natural world.

David Kiehm takes inspiration for his artwork from the natural world. “From my earliest days as a boy running through woods and fields, I have been drawn to beautiful landscapes and the creatures that called those places home,” he shares. “As I got older and discovered art and my need to create, it was just natural that I concentrated on wildlife.”Fresh Scent, oil on panel, 13 x 19”

Kiehm’s travels around the country have exposed him to many different and exciting new landscapes and wildlife.

“Not only is the flora and fauna new, but the lights and the mood it creates are also exhilarating,” he says. “As an artist, I find capturing the time of day, the wind and the smell of a scene just as important as the subject. I want to paint water to look wet and snow to make the viewer feel cold.”Crossing the Gibbon, oil on panel, 20 x 18"

Kiehm favors a realistic artwork style because he loves all of the elements that knit together to convey what he sees and feels.

“Great design is always foremost in the final composition, and this hopefully creates an image...satisfying to both the viewer and myself,” he explains. “Understanding that too much information can stop the eye from flowing through a painting is a constant challenge to me to create images that both intrigues and inspires without cluttering the canvas.”The Strike, oil on panel, 24 x 24"

Kiehm paints every day in his studio located in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains of New York where he resided with his family. For him, there are “...too many ideas and subjects…never enough time!” —
