Merry and bright

An upcoming show at Mountain Trails Gallery in Sedona, Arizona, feeds that fire with Holiday Gems & Treasures, running December 6 through the end of the year.

The holidays are a time for gift-giving and a celebration of the things that bring joy to our lives. It’s a purely magical time of year, when everything seems just a bit more beautiful than usual, and most of the time, that feeling is infectious. An upcoming show at Mountain Trails Gallery in Sedona, Arizona, feeds that fire with Holiday Gems & Treasures, running December 6 through the end of the year. Lisa Danielle, The Green Striker Bag, acrylic, 12 x 9”

“We delight in this time of year since our artists honor tradition by creating smaller works in addition to an amazing selection of fine art in a variety of sizes, including gem-like still life paintings, detailed Native American and Western figurative subjects, miniature wildlife paintings, colored pencil paintings, one-of-a-kind jewelry...as well as a wide selection of bronzes,” says Julie R. Williams, director of Mountain Trails Gallery Sedona. “We are especially proud to offer this collection of exceptional gems and treasures by a group of award-winning artists from the West.”Vicki Catapano, 5 of Spades, oil, 12 x 24”

Sandra Byland’s Arctic Hare #1 is a small-scale colored pencil piece at 6 by 6 inches, featuring an ovular hare in the very center of the composition, stark white against a backdrop of pitch black. “I call my pencil work ‘paintings’ as opposed to drawings as the techniques that I have developed are closer to painting—however no paint, brushes or water are used,” says Byland. Other artists whose work can be seen in the show are Vicki Catapano, who brings an oil of five horses in bridles titled 5 of Spades, rendered in detailed realism, as well as Marcia Molnar and Lisa Danielle, who bring oil and acrylic paintings, respectively. Bryce Pettit, Storm Front, bronze, 19 x 11½ x 10½”

Storm Front, a bronze sculpture by Bryce Pettit, depicts a red-tailed hawk. “I live at the top of a ridge in Southwest Colorado where the rising thermals and high vantage point make it a spot that red-tailed hawks frequent...There is a presence that can be felt even if the hawk is not immediately visible,” Pettit says of what inspired the piece. “Songbirds go silent, the chipmunks still; we are all aware of the arrival of a force of nature. Just as a storm front moves in and changes the climate, a red-tail hawk changes the feeling of a space. Even as it passes by, you can feel its strength and power.”Bryce Pettit, Jackson 5, bronze, 38 x 15 x 14”

He continues, “As with most of my work, there is also a personal story alongside the depiction of the animal...The red-tail hawk reminds me to stand strong and create the work that I am uniquely able to create no matter the discouraging setbacks we all face. My goal is to create work that can not just be seen, but actually felt.”

In addition, during the Holiday Gems & Treasures show, collectors can browse the artwork of Raymond Gibby, Bill Cramer, Deborah Copenhaver Fellows, Joe Garcia, Adele Earnshaw, Susan Kliewer, Don Weller, Curt Mattson and many others.  —
