On November 29, Maxwell Alexander Gallery will present its annual Black Friday miniature show through its online store. The works will go on sale at 10 a.m. Pacific time, and competition is expected to be fierce as collectors try to get their hands on new works from artists such as Joshua Clare, Brett Allen Johnson, Eric Merrell, John Moyers, David Grossmann and other top Western artists at the Los Angeles gallery.Brett Allen Johnson, Dust on the Horizon, pen and charcoal, 6 x 4"

Josh Clare, Fresh Dew, oil, 11 x 14"

Johnson’s new piece, a pen and charcoal work, shows a cowboy in a relaxed pose. “It’s a pretty simple three-quarter profile, but I often like to have some sense of narrative with a figure as well,” the Utah artist says. “I think it’s as much about what’s happening outside the frame as it is about the portrait. I see the gaze of a man with steady nerves, who awaits whatever task or fate may be coming with the confidence and awareness of someone who’s seen it all before.”David Grossmann, Fields, Foothills and Fourteeners, oil on linen panel, 6 x 8"

John Moyers, Canyon Man, oil, 8 x 6"

Clare will be showing his farm scene Fresh Dew, which started as an experiment. “Fresh Dew was a study in subtlety and edges and I’m pleased with how the painting ended up feeling,” Clare says, “That mood is partially due to how the subject is handled, but it’s probably more a result of how much I admire the hard-working, beautiful people that barns embody to me.”Mick Doellinger, Longhorn Skull, bronze, 11 x 5"

Grossmann will be presenting a landscape done with his stylized approach to color and form. “This painting shows part of the Collegiate Peaks range in Colorado,” he says. “The mountains in this area are special to me because I have climbed many of them, and I have also painted many of them over the years. Several of the Collegiate Peaks are over 14,000 feet—known as ‘fourteeners’—and for this painting I wanted to capture the sense of scale as I look up at the peaks from the valley.”

The works will be available at www.maxwellalexandergallery.com through December 1.—
